Monthly Jobs Summary Courtesy of Markit Economics

The latest report on jobs from Markit Economics, sponsored by KPMG LLP and the REC is showing further strong growth in permanent placements, continuing candidate shortages and accelerated salary growth.

Permanent staff appointments accelerated in April albeit at a slightly lower rate than the peak in February with vacancy levels also increasing.

The combination of job opportunities and candidate shortages is also driving up permanent salaries at the fastest rate since April 2007.

Candidate shortages are the most pronounced since October 2004 while the number of people placed in permanent employment continues to rise.

The trends shown above are mirrored by Delta Consultants and, while candidates are in short supply, it is mainly those with relevant post graduate work experience that are most in demand and where the major shortage is.

In the areas Delta Consultants recruit into, particularly scientific, we believe a lot of this can be traced back a number of years to when companies only looked for experience, and trainee vacancies were few and far between.

Consequently the number of younger candidates with a Biomedical Science background, for instance, and a few years in sales or applications are now at a premium and not in enough numbers to fill the available jobs.

"I wanted to thank you for helping me secure this position. Your level of care, commitment and professionalism was outstanding. Unlike other recruitment agencies, you always responded to my e-mails quickly and even asked for an interview. Meeting with Ann Pinn was lovely. I found Ann very easy to talk to and can see why she has the task of interviewing people for a living - Ann is definitely a people person"
